Alora Yurts: A Glamping Gem Found Deep in the Rolling Hills of Malaga, Spain

Deep in the rolling hills of the Malaga region of southern Spain you can find the most charming finca with a two story, rustic country home. The home sits high on a hilltop and is surrounded by four romantic mongolian yurts. This quirky country cottage is the new home of Sara and Darren Easey, a couple who recently relocated to Alora, Spain this past November from York, England. In York they ran a successful glamping business for over four years with a customer base of over 5,000. When asked about their decision to pack up their thriving business in York and make the trek to Andalucia, the answer wasn’t surprising - to escape the rain.

The Glamping Hub team recently made the 2 hour commute to Alora Yurts from our European office in Seville, Spain for a local television segment and we were pleasantly surprised. Sara and Darren welcomed us into their home with open arms and big smiles. Sara’s sincerity and Darren’s laid back demeanor would immediately put any guest at ease. With this site’s magnificent views, colorful, fun, Moroccan decor, and several hammock lounge areas scattered throughout the property, you can’t help but feel a sense of calm while at Alora Yurts.

Sara and Darren are truly incredible hosts as they run this four-unit glamping site completely on their own. They manage everything from the strenuous grounds maintenance to all of the property renovations, including their fully equipped outdoor bathroom with standing shower, full vanity and claw foot bathtub. These two are hands on hosts...Darren even dug the ditches and mounted the yurts himself!

As we learned more about the property, what really caught our eye were the wonderful amenities and the attention to detail that Sara and Darren incorporated into their glamping site. Guests of the luxurious yurts can enjoy breakfast in bed, home cooked candlelit dinners, relaxing massages, refreshing dips in the pool, and glasses of wine in the hot tub overlooking the Guadalhorce river at sunset. It is these experiences and details that make a stay at Alora Yurts worth remembering.

So I’m sure you’ve heard of pop up shops, where purveyors of consumer goods set up their wares for show or sale in unusual places for short bursts of time. We’ve all heard stories of the old west…a time over a century ago when people travelled great distances in covered wagons and settled in the open plains to wrangle horses and herd cattle. A time of leather boots, rowdy saloons, and wide open land as far as the eye could see. Well, it seems the wild west rancher lifestyle, which is still very much alive, has now tipped it’s hat said “howdy” to the niche travel market of glamping.

Sheep camping has been in existence since the late 1800’s, when herders would lead their wooly friends in search of prime grazing. The modest wagons were made of simple materials – wood, iron, and canvas – and were mobilized by teams of horses. This, in effect, was the herder’s “home on the range”, acting as shelter, workplace, and transportation. Over time, the wagons evolved and improved in structure and function. Even Studebaker got into the game with its own branded line of caravans.

Today, these sheep camps can still be found across the west and are used by herders, ranchers, construction contractors, and sportsmen.

Men’s Journal recently sent Ryan Van Duzer, travel journalist and cycling enthusiast, to investigate the rapidly-growing tendency in adventure travel, glamping. Ryan arrives at Montana’s Resort at Paws Up (a GlampingHub property) to begin the first installment of their “Remote and Refined” video series of Men’s Journal-approved sites. “Usually when you go over the river and through the woods you get to Grandma’s house,” Van Duzer muses as he pulls into the resort, “but I don’t know many grandmas that live in this kind of style.”

West Coast Tipi Glamping

One of the hottest trends in the glamping world this year has been tipi glamping. We have also seen tipis as a trend this year in décor for children’s playrooms and parties. Although tipis have been around for centuries, originally as the durable housing for Native Americans in the Great Plains, 2012 has been the year of the tipi and we don't see the tendency slowing down anytime soon. These cone-shaped tents were traditionally made of animal hides, and easily constructed and deconstructed to fit the mobile lifestyle of the Great Plains Native Americans. The word tipi comes from the Sioux word “thi” meaning “to dwell.”

The Magical Mongolian Yurt

The view of the inside of a Mongolian yurt can be just as spectacular as the view from its front door. Crisp, white wool felt, honey-colored woods, intricate latticework and brightly painted, gracefully arched rafters…all curving up to a large, perfectly round portal to the sky. The structure of a yurt is a work of superb craftsmanship - unassuming and modest from the outside, but absolutely stunning on the inside.

Major landowners and even folks with large back yards are hearing the call of the beautiful Mongolian yurt and setting up glamping sites on their private properties. What better way to create place for a stress-free romantic getaway or a family staycation. Others are a bit more adventurous, developing glamping sites to accommodate outside travelers looking for unique lodging and access to the natural beauty of a specific area. Either way, a yurt is an excellent investment!

The most recent sign of the celebrity endorsement of glamping was the launch party for Tori Spelling’s new children’s clothing line, Little Maven. The precious glamping-themed launch party was complete with toddler-sized tee pees, fishing, and a fire pit. Tori is a working mother and incorporates her four adorable children into every project she does.

The Atypical Tree House

Glamping recently made yet another appearance in the pop culture arena when two of the constentants on Bachelor Pad spent the night in a vintage Airstream. Toni and Blakely were victorious in last week's challenge and won the opportunity to leave the perpetual dramatics of the house for a peaceful night out in the wilderness.

The reality show stars enjoyed a romantic dinner and and an intimate evening in their well-equipped caravan.

The enchanting island of Cyprus is one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea and has long been a popular holiday destination. People travel here from all over the world to sun themselves on the island’s picturesque sandy beaches and explore the local culture and history. Cheap flights to Cyprus are readily available, and this is the perfect time to start planning a trip to explore this magnificent island.

Most people choose to stay in the capital city of Nicosia, which is bursting with interesting things to see and do. Wandering through the winding streets of the Old City is a great way to get a feel for the island’s history. There are plenty of hotels as well as shops, restaurants and other amenities to be found in the tourist quarter of Laiki Yitonaik, while Nicosia is also famous for its beautiful churches. The 15th century House of the Dragoman is among the most beautiful buildings in the city and provides an excellent example of Ottoman and Venetian architecture.

Lovers of architecture who have booked cheap flights to Cyprus will also want to pay a visit to the historic city of Amathus, which is now largely in ruins. Amathus is home to the historic temple of Aphrodite, while taking time to explore the Necropolis is an uplifting experience. The Stone Age settlements that can be found at Choirokitia date all the way back to the 6th century BC and this UNESCO World Heritage Site contains a collection of more than 60 Stone Age houses.
Cyprus is renowned for its abundant natural beauty, and Cedar Valley is a great place for nature lovers to explore. This large and lovely valley contains thousands of cedar trees, and this is a very peaceful spot for visitors to unwind in while following winding paths through the trees and trying to catch a glimpse of local wildlife such as the moufflon and the wild Cypriot.

People who are travelling with children will want to spend a little time at the Donkey Sanctuary that can be found in Vouni village. The sanctuary consists of more than a dozen stables, where elderly donkeys are taken to be cared for by a dedicated team of animal lovers. Families also have the chance to look after a donkey for a day and get to know first-hand about the lifestyles and habits of these magnificent animals.

Cyrus boasts a richly diverse nightlife scene, meaning that people of all ages and from all walks of life will find plenty to do there after dark. People who want to dance the night away are sure to be satisfied by the nightclubs of Ayia Napa, where international DJs can regularly be heard spinning the latest tunes on the decks. The restaurants and markets in main tourist zones of Cyprus stay open until late in the evening, and shopping and dining in style are popular pastimes among both visitors and local people.

TWO NIGHTS IN A VINEYARD YURT, by Ruben Martinez

Our yearly tradition of traveling to Spain has lead us all around this diverse and colorful country…to big cities, tiny villages, secluded beaches and rocky mountains. On our most recent trip, we had the opportunity to spend two nights in a traditional yurt on the property of a functioning winery (called a “bodega” in Spain), located about 50 minutes north-west of Barcelona.

The bodega is owned and operated by Mark and Arbell, expatriates who have worked hard to restore their original, centuries-old country home in the town of Santa Maria de Olo. They began experimenting with winemaking about eight years ago and have recently found success in their ecologically conscious style of wine production.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Arbell, given a short tour of the facilities, and shown to a sparkling white, canvas yurt overlooking both the small village and their sprawling vines. The accommodation included a gas grill, a cooler, a composting toilet and a natural stone shower and sink built into the restored remnants of the town’s brick-making building. Arbell also included some fresh eggs from the chickens they keep on the property…a much-appreciated touch.

After a siesta and a look around our cozy yurt property, we were treated to a personal wine tasting inside their restored chalet, a unique delight offered to all who visit. We tasted three different merlots, a shiraz and a cabernet… and we left with many bottles of each! The host and hostess were extremely knowledgeable and obliging, with interesting stories about the trials and tribulations associated with operating a self-sufficient winery within a foreign country.

The next day’s activities included a day trip to nearby Montserrat, a seemingly random mountain of rock formations, but with beautiful hiking trails and amazing views. We were also offered us both road and mountain bike tours within the town of Santa Maria de Olo.

Within the town there are a plethora of restaurants and shops to purchase whatnots and supplies. We opted to buy some tenera (steaks) from the small butcher and fresh veggies from the market to grill that night… it paired quite well with a bottle of Mark and Arbell’s oak-aged merlot!

Needless to say, we were sad to depart and move on with our travels in the morning, but excited to take a part of their winery with us in the form of great memories and a healthy quantity of wine. This is a place we will definitely return to and we recommend that you put on your list of glamping sites to visit!

Glamping is a rather unique sort of experience, so the items you will need to take with you will differ greatly from those you would use on a basic camping trip. Luxury camping accommodations frequently offer many of the amenities you can expect to find in a hotel, but since each site is completely different, a few additional steps are needed.

Your packing strategy should start off with a bit of research. The size, style and luxury levels of glamping accommodations can vary a good deal, so you should find out exactly what is included in your glamping package. What types of things will already be in your room when you arrive? Are bedding and towels provided? How are meals prepared?

Next, determine what kinds of outdoor activities will you be doing during the day. What will the weather be like? You may not need anything but a bathing suit, flip-flops and sunscreen, but on the other hand you may need hiking boots, a rain jacket and bug spray. Or maybe you are planning to just stay in and relax. Some glamping sites offer electricity and internet service, so you can bring your laptop and play online games such as Partypoker during your trip. Other accommodations, however, are much more rustic, encouraging you to have a truly natural experience, so a simple deck of playing cards would have to do the trick.

Lastly, consider how much space you will have in your lodging and how the lodging is laid out. You may have very little room or be required to climb to your sleeping quarters so packing light could be a good idea.

While perusing a report written by the U.S. Travel Association, I learned a few remarkable things about the personal and economic benefits of travel.

About 60 million people enter the U.S. every year for personal travel purposes. Almost 15 million U.S. jobs are supported by the travel industry. And close to 2 trillion dollars are spent every year on U.S. travel-related products and services. The economic impact is clear. Travel is among the top revenue generating industries and has the power to influence the nation’s growth. Here’s an interesting tidbit…without the revenue generated by travel and tourism, U.S. citizens would pay an average of $1,000 more in taxes every year!

But enough of numbers, what about the personal benefits? Is it possible that leisure travel can improve your overall life? According to this report, yes.

Leisure travel, and by “leisure travel” I of course mean glamping (bias acknowledged), can boost our quality of life in the following ways:

Glamping Takes the Orange Piece of the Pie

Can’t guess? Well let me tell you.

My friends and I were playing that continually evolving game, Trivial Pursuit, last night. It was my turn. A piece of the pie at stake. Sports and Leisure was the category. On the edge of my seat. Hoping it’s not sports.

Question: “Glamping is an upscale version of what activity?”

That’s right. They didn’t even make me answer.

The term “glamping” has been around since 2005 but in 2009 it appears to have graduated, entering the halls of pop culture via a 2 ½ x 3 ½ inch paper game piece. I took a look at the question card and found that glampig shares this small space with a blockbuster movie, a famous superhero, and an award-winning book. If any of my friends were doubters about the trend of glamping, it ended right there.

The next move is yours! Get out there and go glamping!

Glamping Battles the Sexes

Many of the questions we are asked most frequently are centered around whether glamping caters mainly to females of the semi-indoor persuasion. Some query whether the idea of glamping was generated by the upper echelons of society for the sake of frilly women who don’t like to get their hands dirty or be seen frolicking in the woods without a hairdryer. Others question whether men should even be allowed to glamp if they want to consider themselves “real” men. Still others are put off by the term itself.

Well now is the time to set the record straight! If you answer yes to the following ten questions, whether you are male or female, it is almost certain that you will love and appreciate the sheer awesomeness of glamping.

Do you enjoy the outdoors and being a part of nature?
Do you like to leave the nest once in a while and experience new things?
Would you rather not have to put up your own tent if you had a choice?
Is it nice when someone else plans the day’s activities?
Are comfortable beds and clean bed linens pleasant to sleep in?
Do fresh, local fruits and vegetables taste good?
Is a private washroom preferable to a hole in the dirt?
Should vacations be the perfect mixture of relaxation and adventure?
Do you like to have access to technology if you need it?
Does a watching a brilliant sunset from your own veranda make you smile?

So, all you male-types out there, don’t deny it…even most hardcore campers would answer yes to these questions. It is true that some glamping experiences are more posh than others, but there are options for even the most manly of men. You want to light your own fires and cook your own food? Done. You want to hunt and fish? Done. You want to get dirty? Go for it. You want to sleep under the stars? Why not.

The best thing about glamping is the immense range of styles, prices, locations, amenities, and activities offered. The choices are endless and men and women alike can find the spot that fits them best. So don’t be fooled by the term. It’s just a term. We could have called it “camping where some things are already done for you so you can spend more time doing other better things”, but that seemed a bit cumbersome.

Glamping Dictionary: Tent City

Since the term “vacation” was invented, and probably before, holidaymakers have flocked to the world’s sandy coasts to relax and revive themselves in the sun and salty air. But although trips to the beach have been standard, budget-friendly vacation fare for quite some time, economy hotels and inexpensive house rentals have not always been available for booking. In fact, at the turn of the 19^th century, a budget-conscious beachgoer on the island of Coronado in San Diego would find something quite different: Glamping.

The elegant and luxurious Coronado hotel was opened in 1888 and catered to wealthy travellers looking to improve their health or relax in style by the beach with their family and friends. It was an immensely popular spot, however due to high prices for rooms, this type of lodging was inaccessible to the majority of vacationers seeking beach time with their loved ones. So the owner of the Coronado, John D. Spreckles, erected the Tent City, a colony of safari-style tents laid out in rows parallel to the beach very near to the hotel. The tents had wooden floors, beds, washbasins, and, eventually, electric lighting. Over the years the Tent City developed its own entertainment program and even mustered its own police force. By the time of its dismantling in 1939, the Tent City had become a year-round resort, even having a consistent population in the winter due to improvements to the tent structures.

Glamping Dictionary: Bell Tent

The bell tent is one of the more simple glamping structures. A successor of the tipi, it has a round frame with a peaked canvas roof held up with a single center pole. Additional reinforcement comes from ground-anchored ropes pulled taught from the tent’s sides. Much like safari tents, bell tents are typically created using canvas due to the fabric’s strength in inclement weather and resistance to mold and mildew.

Bell tents are perfect for glamping because their structure allows for a very roomy interior. Starting at about ten feet in diameter, they can sleep a couple to a whole family comfortably. But the things that make a simple bell tent into an authentic glamping experience are the luxurious features added within and the services and amenities provided to the lucky guests.

If You Build It, They Will Glamp!

So by now we all know that glamping is a fabulous alternative to traditional accommodations, that it is a big (and important) step up from camping, and that it is a phenomenon that is spreading like wildfire across the globe. Whereas ten years ago the concept of glamping was cornered in good part by in the UK and the African safari, today we are seeing luxury camping sites cropping up in fields, deserts, mountains, vineyards, and forests from Asia to the Americas to Eastern Europe. But this raises an important question: if more and more landowners jump on the bandwagon, are glampsites going to become a dime a dozen? What is to keep glamping industry from becoming diluted?

In my opinion, the very nature of glamping will allow an enormous variety and number of glampsites to exist at one time. Because each site is completely unique and the vast majority of sites are very small and privately owned, guests who visit will never have the same experience twice. The more options and the more variety, the more people will want to move away from traditional hotels in order to try something a bit out of the ordinary.

This being said, I am far from believing that the hotel industry is going to be swallowed up by glamping, but introducing a new hotel to the world is not the same as introducing a new glampsite. First, a glampsite can be constructed in a matter of days or weeks depending on its level of luxury, and although it does require proper licensing, insurance and adherence to laws and regulations specific to the hospitality industry, the cost, both in dollars and to the land, is far less. Second, a glampsite is meant to be somewhat hidden and not as easily accessed in order to provide guests with a feeling of seclusion and exclusivity. A hotel, no matter how small, is usually well promoted and hard to miss. And third, a glampsite is designed to provide direct access to nature and create a link between interior and exterior that no hotel room can mimic.

A glampsite, in many cases, is a homegrown entity – a room or collection of rooms that reflect the personality of the landowner and the rhythm of the surrounding landscape. Dilution requires uniformity, monotony, and a lack of demand to keep up with supply, none of which exists in the glamping world.

From my point of view, the glamping industry is just beginning to stretch its legs. As long as fresh and innovative glamping experiences can be created, and they adhere to the principles of uniqueness, comfort, and a strong connection to surrounding nature, the more the merrier!

Tent-tastic lodgings in Africa

The African continent may be a long flight (or two) away, but the swollen ankles and questionable plane food will be worth it when you learn about the incredible glamping accommodations that await.

Sky Mall to the Rescue!

If you have flown domestically in the United States in the past decade you will have noticed the slow disappearance of several things. The first to go was the legroom, (unless you are lucky enough to find yourself in business or first class). Then we lost the pillows and blankets for overnight flights (unless you are the first passenger on the plane and are able to grab the one manky set available). Next to go were the in-flight meals, which no one is really sad about. Then, to our dismay, video and audio entertainment went the way of the cuckoo. Of course, on many domestic airlines you can purchase all of the above at three times the price of what they are worth, but thanks to rapidly increasing oil prices and the constant merging of gigantic and sometimes already bankrupt carriers, U.S. air travel in general has lost its luster.

Kamping Gets a Facelift

An article in USA Today on May 26 brought up an interesting tidbit about how traditional campgrounds are changing based on the growing demand for comfortable and convenient outdoor holiday options. Camping is still one of the most popular forms of family vacation in the U.S., but for many the experience has morphed into something quite different. Kampgrounds of America (KOA) in particular has seen dramatic increases in the number of travelers looking for non-tent accommodations. Not only have camping vacations increased over last year, but according to the article, KOA’s have seen a 25% increase in demand for larger, sturdier and more luxurious structures such as lodges, cabins, cottages and platform tents.

Today’s holidaymakers are also looking for outdoor experiences that are close to home. Busy schedules make it difficult to travel long distances on the weekends and the changes in the economy over the past few years have made it harder for families to make extravagant vacation choices. And, in addition to convenience, comfort and clean restroom facilities, more and more families are looking for campgrounds that offer organized activities that will keep their kids busy and happy.

It is because of these changes that many traditional campsites have become glampsites. For tougher campers, there are still plenty locations at these campgrounds to pitch a tent, but even those options have improved. Glamping Dictionary: Tree Sphere

We’ve mentioned before that tree houses are not just for kids and here is proof. Tree spheres are sleeping quarters like you have never seen before. Suspended high in the trees, these orbs dangle and sway and lull you to sleep with a gentle swinging motion. When the treetops move with the wind, the motion of the sphere is like the slow rocking of a boat and the occupants inside experience a weightless, floating feeling. It is called bio-mimicry, where an object is built to be in harmony with the immediate landscape. Tree spheres are built with characteristics unique to the natural settings that surround them and are designed with the strength to withstand all types of weather. Each sphere is held to three trees by vertical lengths of rope and can be accessed by sturdy spiral staircases and suspension bridges. The interior of the sphere is like the inside shell of a nut – one fluid piece of construction – and can accommodate up to three people, depending on the sphere’s size and weight capacity.

At this point you may be wondering if such a thing actually exists! Deep in the rain forests of Vancouver Island near Qualicum Bay in British Columbia, you can find Free Spirit Spheres. Their three spheres, Eryn, Melody and Eve, hang high in the dense foliage, each with different qualities of beauty, design and composition. Eve is the smallest of the three at nine feet in diameter but can sleep two cozily. Melody and Eryn are a bit grander in size and style and have running water. All three spheres have windows that afford lodgers views of the rainforest.
