The area is known for the Tower Hill Volcano, a dormant, inactive volcano that exploded a long time ago and created a crater lake. The crater is about four kilometers wide, with a small wildlife reserve in the center of the lake. To the south is the coast, overlooking the Bass Strait. The coast is protected by the Belfast Coastal Reserve, a federally protected area along the water where local flora and fauna can thrive. Just to the west is Port Fairy, a coastal resort town overlooking the Port Fairy Bay. Here, there are great public beaches as well as a golf course and additional museums and attractions. Explore the remnants of the old volcano, with the land being preserved and reclaimed in the last 50 years, the natural flora and fauna populate the region, allowing for great hikes in the area. Grab a canoe or a kayak and head out onto the waters of the crater lake, exploring the beautiful and serene region. Take a day trip down the coast down to Port Fairy, a coastal town with great beaches. Relax on the sand as the sun shines down from above or hop into the warm waters of the Port Fairy Bay for a calming swim. There are also great museums and attractions in the downtown part of Port Fairy, explaining the history and culture of the region.
