The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest and covers over 5.5 million square kilometers (2.1 millions square miles)! Most of the Amazon is in Brazil, but it also extends across Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The Amazon River runs through the north of the rainforest, with a network of hundreds of waterways which the nearly 500 indigenous tribes of the rainforest use for transportation. Holidays in the Amazon highlight just how rich the biodiversity is in Brazil; here you can hope to catch a glimpse of jaguars, poison dart frogs, piranhas, electric eels and many other animals that call the Amazon rainforest home; around 40,000 plant species, 1,300 bird species, 3,000 types of fish, 430 mammals, and 2.5 million different insect species have been identified in the Amazon and that number grows regularly! The falls are part of the UNESCO-protected Iguaçu National Park and are best viewed from the many catwalks and bridges built through the park. Another beautiful waterfall, Cachoeira da Fumaça, can be found in Chapada Diamantina National Park. Cachoeira da Fumaça is one of Brazil’s largest waterfalls; here the water lacks the volume to reach the bottom and turns into a cloud of mist. This isn’t even the most striking feature of the park! There are also two underground cavities here, Poço Encantado and Poço Azul, which are two pools filled with crystal-clear water. Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, while not home to any waterfalls, comprises an endless stretch of sand dunes on the north coast of the country. Here you’ll find rolling white sand dunes for as far as the eye can see, spotted with deep blue pools of fresh water during the rainy season. Lastly, while not a national park, Mount Roraima is another must-see when in Brazil. Now this landmark may be recognized by many as the mountain from the movie ‘Up,’ Mount Roraima is an imposing, elevated rock formation on the border of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. Located in the far north of Brazil, this location is remote and hard to get to, making the arrival here that much more rewarding. Sounds pretty amazing, right? Pernambuco beaches span 187 kilometers along the coast, and also include the beaches in Recife, like Praia da Boa Viagem, São José da Coroa Grande, and the Carne De Vaca. About 350 kilometers off the coast from Brazil, you’ll have to take a flight from Recife, is the volcanic archipelago Fernando de Noronha. Here you’ll find untouched landscapes with shallow waters brimming with marine life, protected by an ecological sanctuary. With the number of visitors limited per year, Fernando de Noronha is one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in Brazil. Or head south to Florianopolis if you’re looking for beach holidays with a little more city life! Florianopolis is the capital of Santa Catarina and is a coastal destination known for its picturesque beaches and beach resorts. From Rio de Janeiro to Salvador da Bahia, Paraty to Fortaleza, Natal to São Paulo, Brazil is full of amazing vacation destinations. So when is the best time to visit Brazil? Brazil lies in the tropics so it’s the perfect year-round destination. Brazil’s summer runs from December through March and winter is from June through September. However, as Brazil is such a large country, its different regions have a variety of climates. In south Brazil, the dry season runs from March to November, while December to February sees the most rainfall. In the center of the country are the Amazon and Pantanal. The best time to visit the Amazon is in July and August, you’re in a rainforest, so there will still be rain, just less at this time of year. In the Pantanal region, most rain falls from December to March and the best time to see the animals here is during the dry season from April or May to October. Finally, tropical northeastern Brazil has two seasons, although they may be difficult to distinguish, with the average temperature around 26° to 30°C all year long. August to February are the drier months and March to July usually see a few showers. The Carnival of Brazil, is an annual celebration in Rio held each year 40 days before Easter, where more than 2 million people fill the streets during carnival in Rio.
