During their getaway to this cottage, guests can see for themselves why the Roosevelts once spent their summer vacations on Campobello Island—taking advantage of the same opportunities for outdoor recreation that were once available to them, along with the additional ones that can now be enjoyed thanks to the parks, the tour operators, and the local outfitters that can be found on the island today.
Guests will find trails for hiking at Herring Cove Provincial Trail and neighboring Roosevelt Campobello International Park. These trails encompass a range of lengths and difficulty levels, allowing guests of all ages and abilities to enjoy the great outdoors. Some of the trails can also be used for biking. While exploring the trails, guests will also have opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing, with species such as bald eagles, ospreys, and beavers to be seen.
Guests can also see birds and wildlife while going on whale watching tours of the Bay of Fundy via Head Harbour. While exploring the bay, they may spot finback whales, humpback whales, minke whales, Atlantic right whales, puffins, and seals. Alternatively, guests can stay put and simply look out the windows or deck of the cottage, from which they may see whales, porpoises, seals, eagles, and ospreys.
Besides whale watching, the surrounding sea waters also offer opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, sailing, boating, and deep sea fishing. Kayaks can be rented from a local outfitter located just a mile down the road from the cottage.
For sightseeing, guests will be less than a mile from the iconic and historic Head Harbour Lightstation (also known as the East Quoddy Lighthouse), which is reputed to be the most photographed lighthouse in the world. Four more lighthouses can be found in Herring Cove Provincial Park and Roosevelt Campobello International Park, where guests can also visit the Roosevelts' summer cottage, flower gardens, and carriage and logging roads that were once used by the Roosevelts.
At the parks, guests can also enjoy golfing on a nine-hole golf course and dining at Herring Cove Restaurant. Other dining options include the Prince Cafe, the Pier on the Waterfront, Family Fisheries Restaurant, and Deanna's by the Bay.
