Scenic views
Privacy in nature is what guests will experience on this fourth-generation homestead in Golden Lake, Ontario. Guest will have their own private hiking trail which leads to a spectacular view and an off-grid log cabin situated on top of an escarpment overlooking the northern, sandy-bottomed shores of the lake from which the area gets its name. On the escarpment, guests will find a 2,200-hectare (5,436-acre) conservation area, with 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) of multi-use trails winding through a variegated landscape of oak savannas, pine forests, ponds, wetlands, rocky outcrops, and breathtaking vistas of the lake and the Bonnechere River Valley. These environments, in turn, provide habitats to a variety of wildlife and birdlife, including minks, otters, muskrats, beavers, deer, foxes, dark-eyed juncos, hermit thrushes, turkey vultures, and bald eagles.

In the surrounding Ottawa Valley, guests will find more than two million hectares (six million acres) of natural splendor, encompassing a variety of woodlands, over 900 lakes, and four major river systems, of which the Bonnechere River is one. Before flowing into and out of Golden Lake, the river begins its 145-kilometer (90-mile) journey in Algonquin Provincial Park, which is located about an hour to the east. Boasting 7,654 square kilometers (2,955 square miles) of parkland, more than 2,400 lakes, and 1,200 kilometers (645 miles) of rivers and streams, the park is one of the largest, oldest, and most popular provincial parks in all of Canada. Guests have access to a park pass for free day use.

A public picnic and beach area are located just a few minutes down the road in Deacon. About 26 miles to the east, guests will find the Bonnechere Caves, the limestone walls of which are embedded with thousands of fossils dating back millions of years. At the Bonnchere Museum, guests will find even more fossils from the Ordovician period of the Paleozoic era. Other museums in the area include the Polish Kashub Heritage Museum in Wilno, the Algonquin Way Cultural Centre in Golden Lake, and the Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village in Pembroke. Guests will find a few dining options in the nearby towns of Golden Lake, Killaloe, and Barry's Bay.

The cabin is about an hour and 45 minutes from the city of Ottawa, where the nearest international airport is located.
