The Bryson City area, and the rest of the country around the Appalachian Mountains, takes pride in being a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, with a wide range of activities from trails for hiking, walking, biking, fishing, camping, hunting, rafting, kayaking, and tubing down Deep Creek. The Appalachian Trail stretches through Swain County from south of the Nantahala Gorge, across Fontana Dam, and then follows the highest ridges of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park past Clingmans Dome and Newfound Gap on its way to Maine. The Smokies National Park is easily accessible from Bryson City and features more than 800 miles of trails through various terrain that includes deep creeks, mountainous ridges, rivers, and lakeside trails.

In the winter months, the Smoky Mountains transform into an exquisite winter wonderland, and due to the mild winters, it provides the perfect scene for a quiet walk or hikes through the landscape while taking in the leafless trees and the spectacular waterfalls.
