Hog Hammock

Discover the best of Sapelo Island camping in Georgia with these luxury Hog Hammock rentals

Hog Hammock is a unique and utterly fascinating community on Sapelo Island. The majority of the full-time inhabitants of this community are African Americans known as Gullah-Geechees, who are descendants of enslaved West African people brought to the island in the 1700s and 1800s to work on the island plantations. To this day, the locals maintain unique local customs, dialect, and lifestyle. It's also a small place, with less than 50 full-time residents, which means that the natural beauty of the island remains nearly untouched. Any glamper will have a blast exploring this utterly unique destination during Sapelo Island camping trips, with its historic town, to the pristine beaches, winding wilderness trails, and the plethora of sea turtle nests, alligators, and birds.
