Featherston

Based near Lake Wairarapa, Featherston is host to plenty of attractions outdoor adventures that will take you to rail museums and cafes; and all the same, cliffs, rocks, and water. You can visit the Fell Locomotive Museum, home to the only Fell engine in the world. C’est Cheese is definitely a worthwhile pit stop, as you’ll find plenty of unique gifts exclusive to the town. Step outside of Featherston, and you’ll also find the region’s own version of the famous English Stonehenge, called “Stonehenge Aotearoa,” complete with occasional druid ceremonies. Tararua Forest Park is also a great destination if you’re into rewarding hikes that take you up almost a mile above sea level. There’s a must-do on this itinerary, and it involves spectating the Putangirua Pinnacles—a valley encompassed by a beautiful formation of rocks.
