The surrounding region is full of natural areas for guests to enjoy. At the Raukumara Conservation Area, guests will find 115,000 rugged hectares of forests, mountains, rivers, and wetlands. At the Urutawa Conservation Area and the Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve, guests will find 23,800 more hectares of forests to explore, along with hiking trails that offer a range of difficulty levels. At the Hukutaia Domain, they will find a large collection of native New Zealand trees, including a 2,000-year-old puriri tree named Taketakerau.
At the sea, guests will find sandy beaches that are safe for swimming, such as Tirohanga, Hukuwai, Waiotahi, and Ohiwa Beach. The surrounding waters of the ocean, Ohiwa Harbour, and the Waioeka and Motu Rivers are suitable for surfing, boating, kayaking, and fishing as well.
The Motu Trails network of cycling trails runs through the area, which is also home to the annual Motu Challenge Multisport Event and the Motu 160 Cycling/Mountain Biking Event. Guests can go swimming at Tirohanga, Hukuwai, Waiotahi, and Ohiwa Beach. For surfing, they can head to Tirohanga Beach or Waiotahi Beach, at the latter of which they will find the Opotiki Surf Club. Guests can go kayaking, rafting, and jet boating down the Waioeka and Motu Rivers. For fishing, guests can go surfcasting at the many beache, sport fishing at the Waioeka and Motu Rivers, and charter boat fishing through Opotiki Fishing Charters.
For hiking, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and tree/plant observing, guests can head to the Raukumara Conservation Area, the Urutawa Conservation Area, the Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve, and the Hukutaia Domain. For cycling, guests can pedal on the Motu Trails system, which runs through the area. For golfing, they can hit the links at the Opotiki Golf Club.
