Based near Tongariro River, the small town of Turangi offers visitors plenty of outdoor spots with cool activities available. There’s Lake Taupo, a luscious river home to giant rocks with Maori engravings, fishing spots, parachuting activities, and a volcano. Then there’s Lake Rotoaira, a fly-fishing area—though; you’ll have to get an access permit to indulge in this hotspot. Nearby is also Tongariro National Park, home to three active volcanoes: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu. You’ll also have access to outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and kayaking on spots like the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail and Tongariro River. An exciting option is whitewater rafting the rapids of Tongariro River, so be sure to consider it in your travels through the region.
