Atarau

Based in South Island’s west coast, the Atarau region is one of a few pit stops travelers reach before entering Paparoa National Park. If you’re driving through Atarau, don’t expect to find much. Granted; it’s totally fine considering the scenic reserve you’re soon to reach. Paparoa National Park is home to some of the most amazing pancake rocks in New Zealand, along with a plethora of other ridiculous natural features. You’ll discover deep forests filled with waterfalls and gorges—all areas washed by fluorescent waters. You’ll trek through limestone canyons, climb up to breathtaking viewpoints, and experience an entire region famous for its dramatic landscapes. As such, when you drive through Atarau, you won’t see much. The best is saved for last; that is—your destination in Paparoa National Park.
