Barrys Bay

A small bay off the coast of eastern South Island, Barrys Bay is home to a number of small towns, including Akaroa, perhaps the main destination you’ll want to check out in the region. But first, you must visit Barrys Bay Cheese, the last remaining factory in the bay. There, you can watch how cheese is made and enjoy samples as well as local wines. Afterwards, head to Akaroa, where Hector's dolphins leap in and out of the luscious teal waters of Akaroa Harbour. There, you’ll also find Akaroa Lighthouse and Akaroa Museum Te Whare Taonga—both historic places that showcase aspects of the region’s past and culture. You’ll have access to plenty of other quaint towns, including Takamatua and Duvauchelle, so best be prepared for quite the road trip.
