This accommodation is located in the seaport village of French Pass in the scenic Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand's South Island. Surrounded by native bush, the accommodation provides guests with views of the village's beach and the ocean lapping into Elmslie Bay, where guests can see dolphins, sting rays, and seabird—including king shags, which are among the rarest seabirds in the world and can only be found in the outer Marlborough Sounds.

To the northwest lies the narrow straight of French Pass (also known as Te Aumiti), which separates the mainland of South Island from the sparsely populated d'Urville Island. The forests and shores of the latter provide habitats for a variety of native birds, including tuis, bellbirds, bush robins, wekas, kakas, and blue penguins. The island is also home to Catherine Cove, which contains spectacular waterfalls surrounded by native trees and ferns that are illuminated by glow worms at night.

One of the virtues of the accommodation's location is that the drive to reach it is an attraction in itself. From Rai Valley, the 1.5-hour route takes guests past bucolic farmland, native bush, stunning seascapes, and views of Admiralty Bay, the Outer Pelorus Sounds, and Croisilles Harbour. The accommodation is about two hours from Nelson, where the nearest major airport is located.

At the reserve, guests can keep an eye out for blue penguins, king shags, and dolphins, while the four-to-five-hour loop trail takes guests past two waterfalls and ends at the Wilderness Cafe, making it an excellent day trip opportunity.

To explore the coastal waters of French Pass and the Marlborough Sounds, guests can go kayaking, or they can take a scenic wildlife tour or fishing trip with a local boat operator with whom the host can make arrangements for guests. Depending on their luck, guests may see bottlenose dolphins, dusky dolphins, orcas, and whales during their tour.

Last but certainly not least, guests can go swimming at the village of French Pass's safe swimming beach, which is just a short walk away from the accommodation.
