The park is classified as a National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service and it’s easy to see why. There are so many things to do in Cook Forest State Park, but there are few guest favorites that stand out. When reading about Cook Forest, you will almost always come across the Forest Cathedral. The name may sound a bit dramatic, but it is truly a special part of the park. The tract covers about 332 acres in the heart of the park and is one of the largest stands of primeval eastern white pine and eastern hemlock in Pennsylvania. It contains trees over 300 years old with many exceeding three feet in diameter and 200 feet in height, a relic of the forest that once covered northern Pennsylvania. Hiking trail options in the park can take you through the Forest Cathedral and much more. The 27 marked trails total some 29 miles for the best hiking. PA state parks often have great hiking, but in Cook Forest you’ll find some of our favorites. Special scenic areas you can find along your hikes are the old growth forest, Fire Tower/Seneca Point and the Clarion River. A more minor attraction is the short rock "grotto" found in the middle of the mountain-laurel thickets along Seneca trail, roughly halfway between the Fire Tower/Seneca Point area and the end of Deer Park Trail. Two major hikes in PA also cross through the park; the Baker Trail and the North Country Trail. The Baker Trail (140 miles) runs from Freeport, in southern Armstrong County, to the Allegheny National Forest. The North Country Trail is still under development and will eventually connect the Missouri River in North Dakota with the Adirondack Mountains in New York! There’s still much more to do in the park. Bikes are allowed on all one-way dirt roads in the park and the Clarion River is a great place to go fishing or kayaking.
