The southern region of New Mexico holds a beautiful outdoor landscape called the Lincoln National Forest. With over 1 million acres of protected land, the Lincoln National Forest offers countless exciting outdoor activities and attractions. The region is great for hiking as there are trails for any level including short beginner trails and longer advanced hikes. Look for local plants in the forested region and meadows including juniper, desert shrubs, and wild flowers. This spot can be quite exciting for children as this region is known as the place of origin of the tale of Smokey the Bear, which is all based on a real life story that had happened in the area with a recued bear. An interesting point of interest are the old lookout towers that were once used to flag wildfires in the forest. Lincoln National Forest is a great weekend getaway for the whole family!
