Named after Daniel Boone, the American pioneer and explorer, the city of Boone is a great base from which to explore the region’s mountainous terrain in the spirit of its namesake. Just ten miles to the north, Elk Knob State Park, which was established in 2003 to preserve land at risk of development, preserves 3,680 acres and is home to deer, wild turkeys, black bears, and a diverse vegetation. Ambitious hikers are rewarded with views of Grandfather Mountain. Linville peak sits at the top of Grandfather Mountain, the highest point in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Only the most intrepid hikers enjoy its spectacular views, which are well-worth the climb and the walk across the Mile High Swinging Bridge. The Pisgah National Forest, with its 200 miles of trails, offers yet another destination for hikers and bikers in the region. Take a note from Daniel Boone, and travel deep into the mountains for an overnight stay in one of these unique rentals nestled in North Carolina’s hills.
