Málaga, a major coastal city in Spain, can be reached in under one hour from Nerja. In the popular southern city, guests may visit La Alcazaba, a Moorish palace from the 8th century, packed with history, beautiful gardens, citadels, and antiques. Guests could also pay a visit to Castillo de Gibralfaro, a hilltop fortress that has been maintained for over 2,500 years, and wander through all of the markets, parks, and fascinating museums the city has to offer.
Glampers may not have any need to leave Nerja, however, as the unique destination boasts every kind of activity a glamper could hope to try. Nerja rests partially in the Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama, meaning guests will find themselves tucked away in mountain bliss with views of the Mediterranean, as well. The park offers an abundance of hiking trails for all levels of hikers, from basic walks to overlooks to exhilarating hiking straight up rocky cliffs. A popular hike in the area is up to El Cielo, the highest coastal mountain in the area. Glampers who make it to the top of El Cielo will be graced with unobstructed views of the entire Costa del Sol, the North African coastline, and the major summit of the Sierra de Tejeda, weather permitting. Guests should be sure to prepare properly for the hikes and conduct research about the trails beforehand.
For another once-in-a-lifetime hiking experience, guests should hike up the Rio Chíllar, a popular adventure that many local families embark upon every summer. Along the hike, guests will find themselves splashing about in the river, encountering stunning waterfalls and natural swimming pools in which glampers can cool off and break for a picnic.
Nerja boasts twelve beaches in total, with some of them, such as Maro, Burriana, and El Playazo, considered some of the most beautiful beaches along the Costa del Sol. Guests are encouraged to relax on the sandy shores or venture out in kayaks to discover hidden water-filled caves and grand waterfalls along the coastline.
A popular site in the area is the Nerja Caves, or Las Cuevas de Nerja, home to the world’s largest column and the world’s oldest Neanderthal cave paintings. The beauty of the stalagmite-packed caves only adds to the rich history found inside them, beckoning guests to hunker down and experience the natural wonder up-close.
