Flitting among these trees are more than 190 species of birds that live or seasonally visit the park, including Carolina chickadees, wild turkeys, barred owls, red-tailed hawks, and tufted titmice, which live in the park year-round. The park also provides habitats for more than 50 species of mammals, ranging from the more commonly seen white-tailed deer and gray squirrels to the more elusive black bears, spotted skunks, and big brown bats. Guests will find a variety of outdoor recreation options at nearby Shenandoah National Park. For hiking, guests can explore more than 500 miles of trails, including a 101-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail. For fishing, guests can cast their lines into more than 70 mountain streams and rivers for fish such as brook trout.
For wildlife viewing and birdwatching, guests can keep an eye out for the more than 50 species of mammals and 190 species of birds that live or spend of the year in the park. Another way to enjoy the natural beauty of the park is by biking or driving down the scenic Skyline Drive.
