Nebraska's largest reservoir, Lake McConaughy offers a range of activities from boating, fishing, and swimming. There are several trails, both by foot and by bike, and at Lake Ogallala, the Park Naturalist leads several bird walks with binoculars, bird guides, and checklists all provided. At the Ash Hollow State Historical Park, guests can explore what was once a major stopping-off point on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails.
Remnants of Nebraska's history can still be seen in the park's rock schoolhouse, an ancient cave, and a freshwater spring. There is also a museum and occasional music and dramatic events held in the park grounds. Meanwhile, Ogallala's Front Street replicates an old west town, giving visitors a taste of frontier life. The Cowboy Museum is free and provides an insight into the everyday life of a cowboy.
