Lead

Lead, South Dakota, lies in the iconic Black Hills region of the Mount Rushmore State. Originally a mining town, home of the Gold Rush-era Homestake mine, once the deepest and most productive in the region and now better known as an astrophysics observatory, Lead has latterly struck gold as a tourist destination. A must for outdoors fans, it is near the Deer Mountain and Terry Peak ski resorts, and a trailhead for the George S Mickelson Trail, which takes hikers through 100 miles of epic hill country landscapes. With historic Deadwood, whose well-preserved architecture transports visitors back to the Gold Rush-era past, iconic Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, set to be the biggest sculpture in the world when completed, and the Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park with their varied wildlife, all close at hand, Lead makes for a perfect glamping getaway.
