Visit Gunnison River for the best Colorado vacations!

This yurt is located on the Gunnison River in southwest Colorado, and the surrounding wooden fir lathe is highlighted by the backdrop of white insulated wall fabric. Nothing stands in the way of the 360-degree view framed by ten 16 square foot windows. Double French doors open into the fourteen-foot ceilinged yurt topped by a four-foot dome. Directly opposite, at thirty feet, is an eight-foot screened opening that peers out into the surrounding cottonwood forest.

The king-size bed is placed next to this opening so that guests' attention is often balanced between the activities beyond the dome and the soundtrack of noises from the forest inches away. Heat is maintained through a well-stocked wood-burning stove and all the necessary tools to maintain a roaring fire late into the night. There is a leather rocking chair in which guests very well might fade into ultimate relaxation. The cradle that supports the dome dangles a six candle wrought iron candelabra that slowly rotates with the prevailing breezes of the river basin. This, of course, reveals the rafters in ever-changing lights and shadows of the soaring roof rafters.

Along the periphery are two tables and food and clothing storage. A four to six-person dinner table directly below the dome lit by the candelabra. Directly outside, near the entrance, is an outdoor simple kitchen with limited cold water steel sink with prep area, ice refrigerator. There is a composting toilet by Everlet in a horse trailer with all the niceties 20 paces from the yurt along a solar-lighted path. There is a four-person teak table directly on the river for outdoor dining.

Guests can sit and enjoy the sound of the adjacent river rushing feet below while seated at a four-top table and gracefully spit cherry seeds into the river. There are established wildlife corridors for elk and deer. Eagles, red-tailed hawks, and blue herons nest on the property or directly across the river. The river corridor has recently been designated a protected habitat for the western yellow-billed cuckoo: Colorado's newest threatened species. It is a splendid moment when guests and the animal are making eye contact, trying to assess the other's intentions. Glampers can also go fishing, swimming after spring run-off, or just relax by the shore of the river on the hammock. The property has a gently sloping sand beach just downriver of one of the yurts on the riverwalk walkway. The back drop is a series of mountains that rise dramatically from our valley floor, with Mount Gunnison coyly peeking over the top.

Guests can enjoy seasonal activities like skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and mountain biking within immediate area of Paonia. Enjoy sipping on high-altitude wine before you drift off to sleep with a belly brimming with locally grown foodstuffs. Neighboring farms also have vineyard walking tours with tasting rooms, and in town, there are shops, restaurants, and type of small stores that disappeared in most of the county.

Guests will love trying their hand at mountain biking on Jumbo Mountain or the Grand Mesa (the longest single flat mesa in the world); visiting the Black Canyon National Monument; and fishing or boating on the two large reservoirs within 20 minutes of the property, which bring fishermen from all over the world when the caddisflies hatch. Lastly, Crested Butte, a still unspoiled, old Colorado town, is 90 minutes away, over a stunning pass replete with wild flowers and the largest Aspen Grove in the world.
