Shawnee

Among the thickets of trees in Pike National Forest and the rushing waters of the South Platte River is the quiet community of Shawnee. A few rustic cabins and a guest ranch, however, make up the bulk of amenities in this tiny bump in the winding road southwest of Denver. The opportunities for outdoor adventure in natural areas enveloping Shawnee, however, are endless. Hiking trailheads are located right along U.S. 285 and lead into the rugged confines of the national forest. Further west trails atop 10,000-foot Kenosha Pass offer spectacular vistas. Pull-off spots along the river also make ideal locations for an afternoon picnic. Fly fishing on the South Platte near Shawnee is also very popular. Stop in the fly shop at Pine Junction for more details about the best places to cast.
