Location + Surroundings
The pond is surrounded by the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 900 acres of forests, coastal shrublands, kettle ponds, saltwater marshes, and freshwater wetlands. These environments provide seasonal habitats to more than 250 species, including the threatened piping plover. The refuge's shrublands are also home to spotted salamanders, which are endangered in the state of Rhode Island.
Next to the refuge, about a 10-minute drive from the cottage, guests will find Ninigret Park, which contains a swimming pond, a nature observatory, a biking trail, basketball courts, tennis courts, a disc golf course, and a playground. About 10 minutes to the east, guests will find the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge, which surrounds the 800-acre "pond" (technically another coastal lagoon) after which it is named. The refuge safeguards 787 acres of woodlands, shrublands, fields, and sandy beaches that host around 300 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and 20 species of reptiles and amphibians over the course of the year. A barrier beach separates the refuge from the sea and provides nesting sites for piping plovers and least terns.
About 10 minutes to the northwest, guests will find Burlingame State Park, which is centered around Watchaug Pond. Boasting a freshwater beach, canoe rentals, hiking trails, and 3,100 acres of rocky woodland, the park is inhabited by a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, such as foxes, otters, muskrats, and Eastern box turtles. The park is bordered to the south by the Kimball Wildlife Sanctuary, which has trails leading to both the state park and the Kettle Pond Visitor Center of Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge.
The cottage is about an hour and a half from Hartford, Connecticut, where the nearest international airport is located.
- Wildlife watching
- Stand-up paddleboarding

Canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddle-board rentals, lessons, and tours are available from the Kayak Center, and paddling eco-tours are available from Ninigret Pond Ecotour.
Guests will find more than four miles of hiking trails winding through the surrounding Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. While exploring the trails, guests can also enjoy many opportunities for bird-watching, with more than 250 birds seasonally inhabiting the park's forests, coastal shrublands, kettle ponds, saltwater marshes, and freshwater wetlands. Guests can also keep an eye out for the endangered spotted salamanders that live in the park.
More opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, wildlife viewing, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing can be found at Burlingame State Park, which surrounds Watchaug Pond. Canoes can be rented directly from the park. For even more hiking, bird-watching, and wildlife viewing, guests can visit the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge.
