The city lies on the banks of the Matanuska River, a large river flowing from the mountains in eastern Alaska all the way to the Knik Arm, an arm of the Cook Inlet, which eventually flows into the Gulf of Alaska. Due south is the Chugach National Forest, a large federally protected area known for its fantastic hiking and biking trails as well as for its diverse population of bird, mammal, and marine species, especially bald eagles. The city of Anchorage is down the road to the southwest, the largest city and cultural center of the state of Alaska, since about 40% of the state’s population is in Anchorage.
