Wasilla, Alaska

Detailed location provided after booking

Scenic views
Alaska is a state of fewer than 750,000 people where approximately half of the population lives in Anchorage. Guests who haven’t been to Alaska before will be impressed with the immensity of a state that is two and a half times the size of Texas and has a population three-quarter the size of Rhode Island. Wasilla is the sixth largest city in Alaska and its location makes it a perfect base for exploring. It is about one hour from Anchorage in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. It is on the northern point of Cook Inlet and is rich in waterways and mountains. Lake Lucille is in the heart of Wasilla but the large town is also home to Wasilla Lake, Jacobsen Lake, and Finger Lake. Matanuska River also runs nearby. It is close to the northern edge of Chugach State Park and is surrounded by mountains including the Talkeetna, Alaska, and Chugach Ranges.

Wasilla is an excellent base from which to explore Alaska. The summer is a perfect time to be out on one of the many lakes in the area, like Lake Lucille for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating. Summer is also prime time for salmon and trout fishing in the cold Alaskan rivers and creeks. Guests can even take a tour on a float plane for a real Northwoods experience. In the six-month-long winter, guests can take snow machine tours, go snowshoeing, and catch views of the northern lights. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Museum is great for a visit year-round and is filled with trophies, photos, and videos to learn about the sport of dog sledding.

Guests shouldn’t miss a visit to the funky little town of Talkeetna, Alaska—a town full of charm and character where the local mayor is a cat named Stubbs. This tiny village is full of boutique shops, unique restaurants, and tour companies. It is near the base of Denali and is a favorite stop for climbers on the way to and from the mountains. To see Denali from the perspective of a climber without the climb, guests can take a flightseeing tour where they can land on a glacier in Denali. There is also rafting, zip-lining, hiking, and excellent salmon fishing in the area. Visitors to Talkeetna can’t miss the iconic Nagley’s Store where locals stock up on provisions and where the mayor hangs out. This town has so much to offer but everyone’s day ends at the Fairview Inn - an old-fashioned Alaskan saloon where guests can hobnob and exchange stories with native Alaskans, mountain climbers, and adventure seekers from across the globe.

Beyond Talkeetna, guests can continue on to Denali and explore all that the National Park has to offer. There are bus tours through the park where guests can see wildlife such as moose, elk, Dall sheep, and bears. Denali Village also has lots of unique shopping, restaurants, and breweries.

For the experience of a lifetime, adrenaline seekers must check out skydiving at Alaska Skydive Center in Palmer, which is just 20 minutes from Wasilla. This skydive experience is unique as it takes guests above the mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes of the breathtaking Alaskan landscape.

For another truly unique Alaskan experience, guests can travel an hour and a half east to Matanuska Glacier. There, visitors can take climbing tours or hike around and take photos on their own, on the massive glacier.
