There is plenty to do in the surrounding area. Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park is a place of exceptional, even primeval, beauty. Brilliant natural bays and tree-covered islets populate the shoreline of Ja-She Creek, Crystal Springs, and Horr Pond. Over two-thirds of the area is covered by recent lava flows, including vast areas of jagged black basalt. Lassen Volcanic National Park is similar geographically and is home to geysers, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes. The Fort Crook Museum is well worth visiting. Although it does include a traditional museum with exhibits, it also includes community donated, re-built, and refurbished historic buildings from the region. The era is the Civil War era and lumber industry of the late 1800s. All of the buildings have artifacts in-situ as if the owner had just stepped out for lunch!
