Location + Surroundings
Yachats, meaning "dark water at the foot of the mountain," has been nicknamed “the gem of the Oregon coast,” and is one of the best places to stay. It can be both a peaceful retreat as well as a place for outdoor adventure with its many hiking trails and beaches. Despite there being a number of beaches, visitors should not expect to see a lot of sand. Instead, the coastline is mostly comprised of black basalt rock due to the lava flows. A half hour scenic drive along the coast leads to the towns of Newport, Waldport, Seal Rock, Depoe Bay, Otter Rock, and more.
Portland International Airport is 166 miles from Yachats.
- Water sports
- Horseback riding
- Whale watching
- Wildlife watching
The 804 Trail follows the beautiful rocky shores snaking through three state parks and downtown Yachats along the way. It connects the seven-mile stretch of beach to the North with Yachats Ocean Road State Park to the South and makes for a very scenic adventure. Guests looking to get out on the water can join a dolphin or whale watching tour, fishing charter, or boat tour. Surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing take one into the waters of the Pacific for a fast-paced thrill.
Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint has a beach with trails that lead to the lighthouse. This destination is said to be "one of the most visited and photographed landmarks on the West Coast." Cape Perpetua is the highest point on the Oregon coast and is a great place to see the spouting horns and explore the tidepools. Yachats State Park and Devil's Churn also offer excellent tide pool exploration. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a world-class aquarium offering both indoor and outdoor interactive exhibits. Seal Rock State Park will be a hit with birders, who should be sure to bring their binoculars.
Those looking to indulge in some local delicacies will have a number of choices. Luna Sea Fish House is the go-to place for simple seafood in Yachats. Bread and Roses Cafe prepares pastries, bread, sandwiches, and coffee. The Celestial Snail tarts or loaves of Hippie Bread are the most popular and are often sold out. Yachats Brewing pairs beer with local meats for a tasty meal.
