Given the small size of the present-day settlement, it is hard to believe that Sparta, Tennessee very nearly became the state capital instead of Nashville. While the town itself has a number of historic sites, including the Sparta Rock House, frequented by Andrew Jackson, much of its appeal lies in its proximity to the rugged upland scenery of the Cumberland Plateau. The nearby Fall Creek Falls State Park is located in a region of hills and valleys on the western escarpment of the plateau and its eponymous falls, dropping over 270 feet from sheer cliffs are the highest free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi. The park also offers hikers and mountain-bikers miles of trails amid dense woodlands and varied rock formations with fauna that ranges from squirrels to raptors.
