Highlights of the park include the 50-mile-long Piney Creek Horse Trail and the 20-mile-long Four C National Recreation Trail, the latter of which begins at the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area and passes through the Big Slough Wilderness Area. The recreation area is centered around the 45-acre lake for which it is named. Here, guests will find a swimming beach and opportunities for fishing and boating.
At the wilderness area, in turn, guests can enjoy 3,521 acres of woodlands that are untouched by human development, save for the portion of the Four C National Recreation Trail that winds through its oaks, hickories, sweet gums, willows, shortleaf pines, and loblolly pines. The wilderness area is set along the western bank of a 32-mile section of the Neches River.
The cabin is 10 minutes from the town center of Kennard, 15 minutes from Ratcliff, 20 minutes from Crockett, and two hours from Houston, where the nearest international airport is located.

Guests can also explore the forest by horseback on the 53-mile-long Piney Creek Horse Trail. While exploring the trails, guests can keep an eye out for the forest's wildlife and birds, which include deer, turkey, and the endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers.
For water-based activities, guests can head to the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, where they can go swimming, boating, and fishing for largemouth bass, bream, and blue catfish. Around the recreation area, guests will also find the mile-long Tall Pines Trail, the 0.75-mile-long Trail Tamers Trail, and the start of the above-mentioned Four C National Recreation Trail.
