Fishermen will love catching trout in nearby Chattooga River and Harris Lake, while families will have a blast splashing about and swimming inside the lake, creek, and waterfall areas that populate the Nantahala National Forest zone. Hikers will have a field day (or two) investigating the surroundings, with hotspots such as Bridal Veil Falls and Dry Falls being especially popular with explorers. Inside Highlands itself, there are a wide array of antique shops for guests to rummage through, along with art centers and galleries that often host shows and exhibitions that are well worth visiting. The Bascom: Center for the Visual Arts is a particular highlight, as is the Martin-Lipscomb Performing Arts Center. Golfers are well taken care of in these parts, with both the Highlands Country Club and the Old Edwards Club providing courses that are as challenging as they are picturesque. For those after utter relaxation, there are spa centers in Highlands that can get guests to a true place of zen in no time.
