Tutira

Visit Tutira, where you’ll find a vibrant lake perfect for picnics under the sun. The biggest attraction, Lake Tutira, is a wildlife refuge that brings campers and animal lovers of all kinds. The lake has been a bird sanctuary since 1929, making it a great spot to see some of New Zealand’s exotic birds. You’ll find grey ducks, black swans, little white-throated shags, black shags, white-faced herons, and even fantails. Outdoor buffs should indulge in the Tutira Walkway hike; the pathway takes five hours to complete and takes one up Table Mountain, where panoramic views of Hawke’s Bay makes for fantastic photos. Of course, the presence of the lake makes the area a great spot for kayaking and swimming activities, so be sure to bring some swimming apparel.
