This safari tent is part of a unique glamping site that is situated in an abandoned village named Shitou (meaning "stone") in the countryside of Jiayin Town in Honghe Hani and Yi Prefecture, which is located in the southeast of Yunnan Province, China. The village was built and inhabited by the Hani ethnic minority group, who make up the majority of Jiayin Town's population and have lived in the Yunnan Province for more than a thousand years, their culture and history permeating the surrounding area.
In that time, they have developed a vast and complex irrigation network that channels water from the forested Ailao Mountains down to the narrow valleys below, passing through a series of cascading terraces carved into the slopes along the way, which are bordered by palms, willows, and cherry blossom trees. These terraces, in turn, contain rice paddy fields, which are sloughed and fertilized by water buffalos, cows, ducks, chickens, fish, and eels. Encompassing more than 41,000 acres, consisting of up to 3,000 levels of terraces in certain places, and representing a 1,300-year-old tradition of agriculture that is practiced in finely-tuned harmony with the surrounding environment to this day, the resulting Honghe Hani Rice Terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is truly a sight to behold—and one that guests can see parts of right from the glamping site.
The remoteness of the site means that getting there is half the adventure; the closest domestic and international airports are located in Pu'er and Kunming, which are a scenic 5.3 and 5.6-hour-drive away, respectively.
