Location + Surroundings
This safari tent is located at a glamping site at the base of the tallest dunes in the Erg Chigaga area of the Sahara Desert. It is situated about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the rural, oasis village of M'hamid El Ghizlane in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of Morocco. Deriving from the Arabic word for "dune field," an erg is precisely that: a field of dunes—a broad expanse of wind-swept sand in which there is little or no plant growth.
Erg Chigaga (alternatively transliterated as Chegaga) is one of the two major ergs of the Moroccan portion of the Sahara—and of the two, it is the most remote. Accessible only by 4x4 vehicle, camel, or foot, the erg presents guests with a seemingly endless sea of sand rising and falling in all directions, as it rolls off to the horizon in a series of undulating dunes, some of which reach heights of up to 60 meters (196 feet).
M'hamid El Ghizlane is about an eight hour-drive from Marrakesh. From the village, guests walk, ride a camel, or drive to the glamping site with one of the site's guides. Read More
