Spacious Beach Cabins In Macomia, Mozambique

Hut in Macomia , Cabo Delgado

2 guests

These gorgeous cabins, known as bandas in the region, were hand-built by a local workforce and designed by award-winning architects, Cullum and Nightingale. Each banda is mere footsteps from the beach so complete relaxation is always within your grasp. There are large double doors and windows that together create a natural fusion of the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The roof is incredibly high and large, reaching upwards and outwards. The roof extends to cover the stylish, Swahili-inspired veranda, hammock and traditional beach sun loungers that are provided for your enjoyment. Because of the original design of the bandas, gentle sea breezes always pass through them, ensuring you stay cool day and night. Inside there is a discrete shuttered window (reminiscent of a castle's arrow slit or lancet) that sits above a writing desk, where your morning tea, coffee and pastries will be left. The sleeping area is on a raised platform with a lavish king-sized bed under an extravagant, hand-crafted mosquito net. Behind the bedroom is a large open-air bathroom with twin sinks and mirrors and a huge shower.

If you have a larger group or just want some extra space, you can opt for the Banda Suites, which consist of two ajoining Adobe Bandas; one a bedroom and the other a lounge. The buildings are linked by a covered pathway forming a courtyard between them. It is quite similar to the Adobe banda; the only difference really is that is has more than double the space. A spacious lounge with a mezzanine "snug" is across a covered walkway from a beautiful bedroom with views over the beach. Between the two buildings lies a courtyard behind which is a large bathroom with a "loo with a view." These Suites are so spacious - the lounge can be converted to accommodate up to six children.

The cuisine that you will indulge in during your stay creatively blends the very best of Mozambican and Swahili flavors with an international twist. All fish is purchased from local fishermen, farmers and entrepreneurs daily, thereby ensuring you get some of the freshest food you'll ever taste. Because the lodge is small, they are able to cater to your dietary needs so if you have allergies or are vegetarian, vegan, etc. please let the staff know ahead of time and they will create a menu that works for you.

Scenic views
This gorgeous glamping site is located in the Quirimbas National Park, Northern Mozambique, 80km north of Pemba, which is where the nearest international airport is situated. It is a lodge you can visit all year long because it is in the tropics and has sunny days and fresh evenings everyday. If you visit from April to late December, you’ll find yourself in the dry season, which isn’t very dry at all. This season is quite tolerable and pleasant with its fresh evenings and warm days. December until March gives way to the green season which is a bit hotter with higher humidity, yet the sun still shines almost everyday. If it does rain, the rains do not last for long, with rainy episodes in the form of intense but brief showers, usually occurring at night. If you’re into diving, this is the perfect time to visit because the waters are warm and calm and there is excellent visibility.

Nearby you’ll find the Quirimbas National Park, which is the largest marine protected area in Africa and home to pristine coral reefs, five species of turtles, calving humpback whales, and grazing dugongs. Inside the park you’ll find eleven islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago, which stretches all the way up to Tanzania. These tropical, coral islands have enormous cultural and historical value, with a combination of Arabian, Portuguese, and African influences.

The Park also spreads inland, including coastal forest habitats where healthy populations of elephants, lions, leopards, crocodiles and even wild dogs roam the lands. The Park is any ecologist's dream. This remote region was cut off for decades during the civil war and sits in the grey area between the Southern and East African field guides.

Other activities include scuba diving, Rolas Island, Ibo Island, Bush lookouts, Village trips, sunset sails, whale watching, family activities, beach archery, and village football.
