Galatea

Based in the Whakatane district in the Bay of Plenty, the town of Galatea is a small enclave surrounded by forested hills and the Ikawhenua mountain range. Those visiting the region will quickly notice Mt. Tawhiuau’s mammoth presence in the distance, and it serves as a direction sign for where much of the region’s natural beauty lies. You’ll spend early days and nights resting and prepping for your adventures near the mountain. Home to plenty of scenic hiking trails, the mountain’s Tawhiuau track is a great place to start for a trip through deep forests, creeks, and a summit with pretty views of the range’s surrounding nature. Most locals use this track for a race to the top, so if you’re around during the right time, you might just find yourself engaged in community activities.
