A little under three hours in the car from Austin and a little less than two hours from San Antonio, Garner State Park is in the town of Concan, Texas located in Uvalde County. Probably the most popular state park in Texas for camping, the park aften fills by noon during peak season. Local residents and campers from farther away are drawn to the park for its activities on the Frio River, as well as the dances held nightly during the spring and summer. With almost three miles of the Frio River winding its way through the 1,774 acres of this Texas state park, Garner offers tons of things to see and do. The park was originally created in the early 1930s to save a piece of Hill Country and to give men, suffering from the Depression, work. The land was conveyed to the State Parks Board in 1936 and it opened as Garner State Park in 1941. The park was named for John Nance Garner, former Vice-President of the United States who lived and practiced law in the Concan area. The park's size more than doubled when 790 acres were added in 1976, creating the park we know and love today.
