Scenic views
The Old Historic Crab Orchard Museum is located in Tazewell, Virginia, which is an old historic town in the southwest Virginia mountains. The museum's Pioneer Park is a registered archaeological site, known to have been home to parts of the Cherokee community in their Woodland period. The park's Higginbotham Museum Center was built in 1975, and the area now houses 15 historic log cabins and the "Red Barn," which has been converted into a place for events like weddings and receptions.

Tazewell is situated in the regal rolling hills between the Virginia-West Virginia border. The town is nestled between Virginia's George Washington and Jefferson National Forest and the Cherokee National Forest of North Carolina, which are each about three hours away to the north and south of Tazewell. The Crab Orchard Museum is just a nine-minute drive from Tazewell. The biggest nearby city is Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech, which is an hour and a half away from the Orchard Museum by car.
Activities near Tazewell
The Historic Crab Orchard Museum itself has an abundance of activities for visitors to do, from on-site live historical demonstrations--which include drop spindle spinning, blacksmithing, and hearth cooking, to name a few--to the handling of Native American artifacts during guided tours. The museum highly advocates interactive learning, so children and adults alike can delve into the history of settler interactions with Native Americans with hands-on interpretation and role play. After-school arts and crafts classes are also offered to children in elementary school.

Throughout the year, the museum at Pioneer Park also hosts a number of events, like a Casino Night in March or the 15th Annual Tazewell County Old Time & Bluegrass Fiddlers’ Convention in July. In October, the park converts part of its 7,200-acre plot into a pumpkin patch, and the entire area is thematically decorated for "Pioneer Christmas" in December.

From the cottage, Tazewell is under ten minutes away by car, where visitors can enjoy boutique shop and local restaurants in the historic town center. Beyond Tazewell, visitors can venture into the beautiful Ridge-and-Valley Appalachian Mountains or the Cumberland Plateau. Guests will enjoy the unusual geologic formations at Burke's Garden as well as a number of hiking and mountain biking trails near the Frog Level Thompson Valley.
