This beautiful rustic lodge is located above the Bitterroot Valley among the rugged mountains. The lodge is situated on 80 acres of open forested land bordering the National Forest on the west and only a walk away from two spring creeks. Guests stay among the picturesque valley and mountain views and can explore private trails with only wildlife as neighbors.
Lost Horse Canyon and Lake Como are just half an hour south and are very popular regions for recreational activities. Blodgett Canyon and Canyon Creek are twenty minutes north and offer great hikes to overlooks, mountain lakes, rock climbing towers, and alpine basins. The lodge isn’t just a private paradise. It is only minutes away from the Bitterroot River with world class fly fishing opportunities and the Bitterroot Valley’s largest town, Hamilton, which is ideal for shopping, dining and entertainment.
In the winter we are open as a backcountry ski lodge and cater to hardy folks willing to earn their turns: alpine touring skiing, splitboarding, or telemarking. We offer avalanche education classes, backcountry ski skills classes, and private backcountry ski guiding service both from the lodge and amongst the further peaks of the Bitterroot Range.

There are a number of activities available to visitors to the Downing Mountain Lodge. Adrenaline-fueled guests will enjoy backcountry skiing, rafting, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Guests can horseback ride, sail on Flatland Lake, bird-watch or go on scenic safaris. The winter is perfect for skiing down Downing Mountain's gladed slopes. Guests regularly enjoy fly fishing the Bitterroot River or Rock Creek or fishing in the deep blue mountain lakes or hunt a variety of small and big game in the Bitterroot's untainted forests. There are endless swimming opportunities and lakes which are great for cooling off after a long hike. Lake Como is a perfect size for taking out the fishing and ski boat. Hamilton Golf Club is located in Bitterroot Valley for those who fancy swinging the golf club in the afternoons. Your hosts John Lehrman and Jenny Callahan have years of experience guiding in the region and can make your stay a special one whether guiding you on an adventure or just welcoming you to the mountain lodge.
