The small town of Butler, Tennessee rose phoenix-like from the ashes after the original was swallowed by Watauga Lake after the damming of the Watauga and Elk rivers. The new incarnation of Butler lies beside the newly created 6,430-acre reservoir, surrounded by the deep woods of the Cherokee National Forest in what is considered some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire Tennessee watershed. Glampers can enjoy kayaking or fishing on the lake itself or head for the nearby hills, which include Sugar Mountain with its ski resort and Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the fabled Blue Ridge. The area has numerous options for hiking, riding, mountain-biking, or climbing with a number of local companies able to offer tours or equipment rentals.
