About this place
Located on Cormorant Island in Canada, this spacious oceanfront rental overlooks Johnstone Strait from where pods of orcas are often viewed. There are four bedrooms accommodating up to 12 guests. The vast common room has 14’ ceilings, a woodstove, a library and comfortable furniture, making it a welcoming place for family gatherings, corporate groups, or a big cluster of close friends. Guests can enjoy a hot breakfast before setting out from Alert Bay on one of several wildlife tours, including grizzlies and orcas, organized by the host.
Originally built as a church, this picturesque lodge is constructed of fine cedar wood and has plenty of space for a large gathering. The lodge overlooks Johnstone Strait, providing guests with a breathtaking ocean view enhanced further by the neighboring Vancouver Island Mountain Range. Frolicking orcas are visible right from the sundeck, and glampers can get an even closer look by taking advantage of wildlife viewing tours coordinated by the host. The facility offers an eight-hour tour by kayak or covered boat, a grizzly bear tour, a fishing tour, or a multi-day kayak excursion. For those looking to take it easy, the open common room and library offer a cozy place to relax. Those who wish to dine at the lodge may request meal preparation in advance. Packed lunches are also available for guests who wish to enjoy a picnic lunch while enjoying the local scenery. Ironing boards and hair dryers are available upon request.

COVID-19 Actions
Here’s synopsis of the manner in which we’ve adapted our services to provide for your safety and comfort. While most points, below, are woven into our website, please accept this as a handy reference. 1. Checking In When you enter the lobby, look for your name and room number posted on a chalk board in the lobby – next to it is a touchless and a squeeze hand sanitizer. Turning left, you’ll find your room key in your door lock. If you’d like assistance, please ring the bell or turn right into the Great Room. 2. Physical Distancing Built on one level, Alert Bay Lodge is 3000 sq. ft. in size. The lodge has four rooms: two in the east wing and two in the west wing. At 1600 sq. ft., we consider the Great Room and foyer to be public space and face masks must be worn. This room has four conversation nooks and a dining room, so there’s ample room to spread out or sit in small groups. It has a posted limit of ten occupants, including staff. 3. Dining On the mezzanine overlooking Johnstone Strait we have two dining tables that are separated by a distance of eight feet. This area’s southern exposure, open windows and two ceiling fans circulate refreshing ocean breezes. For breakfast, within the time frame of 6:30 am and 8:30 am, we offer an early sitting and a late sitting (exact times are negotiable). Each sitting will accommodate two rooms. You’ll be given the option to share the dining room with the second room or dine separately. Kitchen staff wear a facemask and place prepared meals on a table outside the kitchen. Guests pick up the plate and take it to their reserved table. Fresh napkins and cutlery are available in the dining area. 4. Cleaning Protocols We take great pride in maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for guests. While our regular cleaning protocols are rigorous, we have put additional protocols in place during this period where the containment of COVID-19 is paramount. We have increased the frequency of cleaning key public spaces, wiping down frequently touched items such as door handles and light switches with a bleach-containing, germ-killing formula. 5. Personal Hygiene Best Practices All staff and guests will use best practices associated with minimizing exposure and spread of germs and associated illnesses. These include diligence in regular hand washing, the use of anti-bacterial formulas available in public areas, coughing or sneezing into their sleeve (never hands) and minimizing face touching. 6. Unwell Guests If a guest at Alert Bay Lodge feels unwell, symptoms that are COVID-19 related may include: -Headache -High fever -Fatigue/drowsiness -Sore throat or cough -Chest congestion -Difficulty breathing -Muscle aches and pain -Whether they have been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 If two or more of these symptoms are present, the individual will be asked to self-isolate and a doctor will be contacted to diagnose the individual. Staff who have had contact will be asked to don masks, leave work, and affected areas will be sanitized. Should a guest be identified as having a confirmed case of COVID-19, the Vancouver Island Health Authority will be immediately contacted.
