Hog Hammock is a unique and utterly fascinating community on Sapelo Island. The majority of the full-time inhabitants of this community are African Americans known as Gullah-Geechees, who are descendants of enslaved West African people brought to the island in the 1700s and 1800s to work on the island plantations. To this day, the locals maintain unique local customs, dialect, and lifestyle.
