Camden has a tiny population of just 2,000, but this gem of a town is filled with gorgeous antebellum- and Reconstruction-era homes - although it is necessary to explore outside of town square to really see the best of the local architecture. It is also a town surprisingly rich in history. Founded in 1832 by Thomas Dunn, the town was ransacked by Union troops in 1865. However, some town officials managed to hide the town records before the troops invaded, and according to local legend, the records were buried in a coffin and later unearthed. Make sure to head to the Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center for rare and valuable books, crafts, arts, and to learn a little bit more about the local culture!
