Kaihu

Based near North Island’s west coast, Kaihu serves as a gateway to the natural reserves of Mataraua Forest and Waima Forest. Though a humble town, Kaihu has much history, being occupied first by the Ngati Awa people, and then the Ngati Whatua. Europeans first arrived in the settlement in 1832, deeming it a “suitable place for a mission to be built.” One thing’s certain; Kaihu is definitely a suitable place for you to get rest at when you’re not indulging in the deep woodlands of Mataura and waterfalls of Waima. The two natural regions offer untouched nature; creeks and rivers rushing down cascades, and the Four Sisters—four famous trees that grew quite close to each other. As such, your stay in Kaihu may be quiet, but you’ll have vibrant activities to do in the outdoors that surround it.
