The last major settlement on State Highway 1, Kaitaia is the town that will take you to the furthest parts of New Zealand. A region certainly not short of beauty, you’ll find plenty of natural areas worth exploring, including Cape Reinga and its breathtaking coastline and ninety-mile beach—a stretch of sand renowned for its ridiculous sunsets and left-hand surf breaks. There is also much Maori culture to explore in the settlement, including a Maori cultural center where you can engage in weaving and carving activities. Be sure to stop by Karikari Estate, one of the largest vineyards in the town. Kaitaia may be the end of New Zealand’s North Island, but it certainly isn’t where the fun ends.
