YOUR RIVERSIDE RETREAT EXPERIENCE
Wake up to the sound of flowing water and step outside to explore winding paths that lead you on adventures through our unique landscape. The gentle river offers a peaceful spot for quiet contemplation - perfect for beginners wanting to try their hand at fishing (bring your own rod) or simply to sit and watch the water flow by.
A stay in the hut will be unique – the cabin itself is probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. It was built by an artist over 20 years ago with a handmade cabin at one end, and a vintage caravan at the other. The cabin is off-grid, and it combines rustic charm with all the essentials you need for a comfortable stay, creating that perfect glamping balance of outdoor adventure and cosy comfort.
OFF-GRID GLAMPING VIBES
The cabin has two decks from which you can immerse yourself in the outdoors. You can get to grips with wood fire cooking – either with the Esse Bakeheart stove-cooker inside, or the campfire pit outside. Heat and light are both renewable. Lighting and charge points are solar-powered. Heating is by a wood-burning stove with logs sourced from the immediate area, and the building has natural insulation.
LIVING, COOKING & DINING
The wooden part of the cabin houses the Esse Bakeheart stove-cooker, sofa, daybed, and also a little reading/study nook. The stove will keep you toasty warm, even on cool nights. We provide unlimited logs to keep it stoked.
The Esse Bakeheart is also your indoor cooker – you can use the hot plate on the top, the oven at the bottom, and the fire itself for flame-grilling. Braising, boiling, stewing, simmering, baking, and fire cooking…you can cook whatever you like. For warmer days, you might prefer to cook outdoors on the campfire. You’ll find a circle of rocks for sitting on, and a fire pit in the middle.
The small kitchen has a cold water tap, cast iron pans, cooking implements, crockery, cutlery, and glassware. You’ll have a cool box, but no fridge!
BEDS
Wake up to river views from the cosy double bed in the vintage caravan part of the cabin. One thing to remember is that caravans were not traditionally designed for those of us over 6ft tall! We can promise, however, that the new mattress is very comfy and snuggly. We provide gorgeous aubergine bed linen and plenty of extra blankets for cool nights.
You’ll find plenty of space under the double bed to store bags and belongings. There is also a chest of drawers for clothes storage too.
The “master” bed is a small double at 4ft wide and 6ft long. There is an extra single bed in the living area, which doubles up as a sofa. We can provide bedding if required – please ask!
WC AND SEPARATE SHOWER
The hut has a high-tech, eco toilet, accessed from just outside the main entrance to the cabin. It’s a composting loo, but its revolutionary design means no nasty smells and it’s also straightforward to use.
There is no shower at the hut itself, but guests can use the shower at the “Wash House”, just a few minutes walk, by the mill group of buildings. The Wash House also has a flushing toilet, washing machine and tumble dryer should you need one.
LOCAL ADVENTURES
From your doorstep, explore walking trails toward the stunning Lammermuir Hills, or venture into the charming Royal Burgh of Lauder where local artisans, traditional butchers, and welcoming pubs await. The magnificent Thirlestane Castle, looking like something from a fairytale, is just a short drive away.
For day trips, you're perfectly positioned to explore the Scottish Borders' hidden gems, historic abbeys, and rolling countryside, while Edinburgh's world-class attractions remain easily accessible.
