Idyllic Safari Tent for an Off-Grid Glamping Getaway in Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, India
Safari tent in Utakamand, Tamil Nadu
2 guests
Surrounded by 150 private acres of lush, wildlife-filled forest, this luxurious safari tent is located at an off-grid glamping site in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve of India, where it can provide two guests with an idyllic glamping getaway full of hiking, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and reconnecting to nature amid the verdantly forested, meadow-strewn hills of the rolling countryside of the Nilgiris District in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Inside the tent, guests will find a bedroom and a full ensuite bathroom. The bedroom is furnished with a handcrafted, four-poster king-size bed featuring a rustic, rough-hewn wooden frame. Flanked by nightstands with bedside lamps, the bed is set on a wood-plank floor and surrounded by windows with roll-up blinds. A coffee table accompanied by a pair of chairs provide guests with a cozy nook in which to read, relax, or talk, while an elegant wooden desk placed in front on a large window offers an inviting space in which to work or write.
In the bathroom, guests will find a flushing toilet, a vessel sink, and a walk-in shower, which are supplied with gravity-pressurized hot and cold water. Linens and towels are provided. Other amenities include Wi-Fi access, 220V, 50Hz AC power points for charging cell phones, cameras, and laptops via 100% solar-powered electricity; four complimentary bottles of purified drinking water per day; and complimentary breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Prepared in the on-site kitchen, which features a wood-fired oven, the breakfasts consist of Continental and Pan Asian fare, while the lunches feature a medley of Tribal Indian cuisines from the surrounding Nilgiri region.
The tent is elevated to provide protection from the local wildlife without the use of harmful electric fencing. Outside, guests will find a sun deck overlooking a waterhole or a salt lick that attracts the wildlife—including elephants.
The property at which this accommodation is located is completely off-grid and ecologically sustainable. The site's electricity is 100% generated by solar power, and its water is provided by natural spring water that flows to the site from the rocks behind it. Rather than wildlife-harming electric fencing, protection from the many animals that live in the surrounding forests is achieved through off-ground elevation of the site's glamping tents and adherence to protocols that respect the wildlife and cultivate an ethos of coexistence.
Given its off-grid nature and its location, which is set at end of a 1.9-mile dirt road within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the site is a true getaway destination located in a lush, wildlife-rich natural setting. At the same time, however, it provides guests with a full range of the amenities that one would expect while glamping. These include Wi-Fi access; 220V, 50Hz AC power points for charging cell phones, cameras, and laptops; and private bathrooms with gravity-pressurized hot and cold water, showers, flushing toilets, and vessel sinks.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the rental rate and are served in either the site's garden or the dining area in its jungle lodge. The breakfasts consist of Continental and Pan Asian fare, while the lunches feature a medley of Tribal Indian cuisines from the surrounding Nilgiri region. Food is prepared in the on-site kitchen, which features a wood-fired oven Guests are provided with four complimentary bottles of purified drinking water per day. All of the water that the site uses for cooking is filtered before it is used.
During the day, guided nature walks are available from the site's naturalist. Every night, a bonfire is lit in the site's central communal area. All of the site's staff are fluent in English, and they are available to pick up guests from the nearby village of Ebbanadu to help them make the final journey to the site, which is accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicle.
