Based in Central Otago, Waipiata is former factory town that now serves as a gateway for those traveling down South Island in destination to Dunedin and the Southern Alps. You won’t find much to do in the old town, as much of it is farmland and old factories. Still, you find plenty of roads worth cycling through, and a trip through the town will feel like a rugged road trip adventure. For outdoor buffs crossing through Waipiata, be sure to stop by Karitane before reaching Dunedin. The seaside settlement is home to a beach that stretches around the coast’s cove, and you’ll also find the waters ideal for kayaking and boating activities. You might not find much at Waipiata, but be sure to drive through it; it will add character to your rugged adventures through South Island.
