Scenic views
Around 3,500 species of plants grow in the mountains, with more than a quarter of them exclusive to the region. The mountains are also home to an abundance of wildlife, including over 270 species of birds and a number of rare or endemic species, such as the Usambara eagle owl, the Usambara weaver, the Usambara akalat, and an unusual species of frog that gives live birth, rather than laying eggs.
To the north, guests will find Mkomazi National Park, which encompasses 3,200 square kilometers and blends into Tsavo West National Park in Kenya. The park provides a refuge for black rhinos and African wild dogs, both of which are highly endangered. During the wet season, it is also a migration site for herds of elephant, oryx, and zebra.
The site is about two hours from Lushoto (where the nearest domestic airport is located), four hours and 40 minutes from Tanga, and eight hours from Dar es Salaam, where the nearest international airport is located. Express buses run from Tanga, Moshi, Arusha, and Dar es Salaam to Lushoto and Mambo, where taxis can then take guests to the site.
