Location + Surroundings
Less than two miles to the east, guests will find a long stretch of three interconnected state forests stretching north to south: Wurtsboro Ridge, Roosa Gap, and Shawangunk Ridge. These forests are all linked together by a marked hiking trail, and each of them contains their own trails as well. Exploring these woodland trails, guests may pass by pitch pines, scrub oaks, blueberry plants, mountain laurel, conglomerate rock slabs, and breathtaking views of the Catskill Mountains and the surrounding valley. Along the way, they may spot a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, including deer, coyotes, warblers, flycatchers, peregrine falcons, salamanders, and wood turtles.
To the south, guests will find the Basha Kill Wildlife Refuge and Management Area, encompassing more than 3,000 acres of wetlands and forested uplands that are home to or visited by more than 200 species of birds, including bald eagles and ospreys. The wetlands also attract mammals such as beavers, otters, and muskrats. After visiting the refuge, guests can head over to the Bashakill Vineyards and Winery, which are right across the street from the refuge's trails and kayak boat launch.
Guests will find a handful of stores and restaurants in the small town of Wurtsboro, with more to be found in nearby Rock Hill and Ellenville. The camper is about an hour and 40 minutes from New York City, where the nearest international airport is located.
