Hill City, South Dakota is known as the “Heart of the Hills” for its proximity to some of the Black Hills region’s most renowned attractions such as historic Deadwood and iconic Mount Rushmore. A former mining town turned tourist center, it is a stop on the Black Hills Central Railroad, which takes visitors on period steam trains through miles of rugged, forested terrain to Keystone. The more active can explore the region via the 100-mile long George S Mickelson Trail which connects Hill City with Lead and Deadwood, passing through some stunning mountain landscapes in the process. With the landscapes and nature of nearby Custer State Park, ranging from bison herds to prairie dog “towns”, and the deep, mysterious Wind Cave both nearby, combined with the town’s status as the arts hub of the area, glampers wishing to head for the hills this vacation will not be disappointed.
